From time to time we all get bored, frustrated, and a little unmotivated at work. Sometimes this is because we are not being challenged enough or sometimes it’s because a project we are working on is stalling. Whatever the case may be, our inner #GirlBoss needs inspiration once and a while. So, after a long week at work, head home Friday night, grab a girlfriend, pick up a bottle of rosé, and pop one of these inspirational movies on. Monday morning won’t know what hit it!

Baby Boom

Synopsis

Starring Diane Keaton, this oldie but goodie, portrays the life of J.C. Wiatt; a career focused, powerhouse of a woman. She has a perfectly structured life. However, it is turned upside when she inherits a toddler from a distant relative. Unable to give the baby up she tries, unsuccessfully, to juggle motherhood and her corporate career. Thinking her working life is over she moves to the country to focus on her daughter. What happens next is inspirational and totally bad ass.

Why We Love It

Obviously the shoulder pads and the sneakers with skirts! But, in all seriousness, Keaton’s character is a relatable superwoman. She made it to the top of her field, in spite of being a woman, and is viewed as a smart person in the work place. To get to this point J.C. has made sacrifices, however, when life throws a wrench in it how she deals with the challenge is amazing! This movie has a “when life gives you lemons, make lemonade” vibe that we just can’t get enough of.

Working Girl

Synopsis

Tess McGill, played by Melanie Griffith, is an ambitious 80’s, receptionist. In a working world dominated by men and a few women who have clawed their way to the top, Tess dreams of snagging a corner office. When she is hired to work for a top business woman, she sees this as her big break. Finally, she has a mentor and a boss who understand her and her ambitions. However, when her boss steals one of her ideas Tess takes her opportunity to show the world who is really the bright one, by impersonating her boss.

Why We Love It

While we never recommend impersonating your way to the top, Tess’s ambition and drive to succeed, no matter the cost, is infectious. Her smart moves, brilliant ideas, and air of confidence is definitely worth emulating.

The Devil Wears Prada

Synopsis

Based on the book of the same name, The Devil Wears Prada, is the perfect combination of career inspiration and workwear fashion show. In the movie Anne Hathaway character, Andy, has just graduated from university and is hunting for a job. Unable to find one, she settles for an assistant job at a fashion magazine working for a hellish boss.

Why We Love It

At some point in our careers we all just need a paycheck. This movie is a fantastic example of how to rock a job you are not totally in love with. It is a rally cry to put all your effort into every opportunity because it might just lead you somewhere amazing, like Paris.

Erin Brockovich

Synopsis

Starring Julia Roberts, Erin Brockovich is an inspiring film that will show you where hard work, passion, perseverance, and intelligence can get you. In this movie, single mom, Erin finds herself working for a curmudgeon of a lawyer trying to solve a community wide health crisis. The story follows Julia’s character through the entire lawsuit as she battles for what is right.

Why We Love It

Erin is a strong and fearless character. Her commitment to her work and to her children is super inspiring. She also overcomes many stereotypical setbacks like having no formal education and being a single mother. Her inner drive and passion are infectious, and after watching this movie you will want to dive head first into a big, gritty project at work.

Morning Glory

Synopsis

Starring the beautiful and witty Rachel McAdam’s, Morning Glory, is a story about a young woman who fights for the career she wants. Overcoming being laid off and her mother’s disapproval, Rachel’s character goes on to create a successful TV show and finds quirky love along the way.

Why We Love It

This movie is fantastic for young women. We love how it showcases a woman at the beginning of her career. Also, Rachel’s off beat character is incredibly lovable; you can’t help rooting for her to succeed.

The Intern

Synopsis

The Intern is the ultimate millennial career movie. Featuring Anne Hathaway as a young successful internet sensation, this film speaks about the type of business that many young women are striving to create.

With clips of a CEO biking through her office and Pinterest inspired work spaces, The Intern is a portrait of the modern working woman told through the eyes of a Grandfather-like businessman. In the film, Hathaway’s character hires an aging retiree, played by Robert De Niro, to be her intern. In short order, boss and intern bond and combine their respective skills to take the tech industry (and their personal lives) by storm.

Why We Love It

The Intern is the perfect movie for today’s ambitious ladies. It is filled with workplace ideals, cute fashion, and team spirit. While we could have done with a more supportive (aka non-scummy) husband, the film will leave you feeling inspired and pumped to start your own tech company.
